As Yourself | Filled to the Brim
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” Psalm 23:5 (NIV)
In our previous devotional we explored how God has called us to Himself and how He wants us to have a healthy self image – to live and embrace who we are so we are able to be effective in love to those around us. We also explored how He modelled this by first being with God alone, His disciples second then with the crowds. We looked into His prayer where He first prayed for Himself, his disciples then their disciples.
God is the Source of everything that we will ever need. Without Him we are useless. When we lay ourselves before Him by putting Him first in everything we do, He enables us for life.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 (NIV)
Part of God’s will for us is that we bear much fruit – fruit that will sustain us and fruit that will sustain those around us. Fruit that will teach us to live according to God’s standard and fruit that will help us to love others as God desires. to receive from God so as to give off to man.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)
“Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” John 15:4 (NIV)
We are called to be channels of God’s blessings and love. We are called to be vessels that God uses. We therefore need to remain in God, the True Vine, be filled with all of Him so that we can give it off to the world. We receive from God to give off to the world.
