Sometimes when we feel like the walls are caving in on us it is God ready to display His glory. God is a God of supernatural strength and if His glory must be seen the situation must be dire. There is always a temptation to carve our own path when we feel stranded and have been waiting on God for long but we need to remember that what God promises us in His word He is faithful to fulfil.
“When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, ‘If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.'” Exodus 13:17 (NIV)
For various reasons God allows hardship but in it He builds our character up to reflect that of Christ and He strengthens our faith so that we may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NIV)
God led them by His glory cloud and pillar of fire; and He led them to what seemed like a dead end. The Israelites felt vulnerable and alone but this did not mean that God was not by their side, it did not mean that God was out of ideas. God always has a plan. His plans may not always make sense to us but He is all knowing. By God’s leading we may be led through trenches but as long as God is on our side we need to hold on to faith, take heart and trust His leading.
“You hem me in – behind and before; You have laid Your hand upon me.” Psalm 139:5 (NIV)
“Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.'” Exodus 14:3 (NIV)
It was God who allowed the Israelites to be encircled by the desert and look like they did not know what they were doing so that they pursued them to their demise that would glorify God. It seemed like they were hemmed in by the desert while they were hemmed in by God. We have to trust in God even when we are backed up in a corner. We are His and He delights in tending to us.
“Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture.” Psalm 100:3 (NIV)
God is the God of the unknown and impossible. If He promises us victory and deliverance we need to hold on to it by faith. God defeated the Egyptians on behalf of the Israelites. If we wait patiently on God He will deliver us from impossible situations so that His glory is seen and His name made known.
“And when the Israelites saw the great power the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in Him and in Moses His servant.” Exodus 14:31 (NIV)
And this was done so that the Lord may be feared and His name made famous! Glory to God.
