House on a Rock
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-25 (NIV)
The beauty of standing amidst trial; the ability to see God in times of turmoil; the peace of resting in the eye of the storm; the faith and hope in the deliverance of our Saviour are things that we can never cultivate on our own. These things, though birthed in seasons of joy, have their fullness expressed in times of hardship.
God, first, does not call us to stand against trial. His primary message is not that of perseverance but that of salvation. Without the salvation of Christ we cannot enjoy the benefits of God.
“From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is near.” Matthew 4:17 (NIV)
“That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 (NIV)
He calls us to find our being and life in Him then everything else is secondary. Life’s roads are full of sharp turns and surprises but when we rest in God the peace we feel in our highs is superceded by the peace we feel in lows. God is the Source of life and all good things in good and bad times.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10 (NIV)
Our firm foundation is Christ, everything else will give way in trials. He is the solid rock on whom all believers should stand.
Stand on Jesus Christ, the rock that does not move – our God who is trustworthy. Let us continually renew our minds by feeding on scripture – the written word of God and stand on it. We will be able to stand amidst trial and see Him in the blurriness of storms as we rest in it’s eye – a place of peace – God. A house on a rock is man built on the words of God.
