Purity

Sex is like a beautiful gift that God gives to a man and woman as soon as they are pronounced husband and wife under oath. He gives it to be unwrapped by and shared only between the two for intimacy, pleasure and reproduction. Anything that is practiced or done outside of the will of God is known as sin and all desire, whether good or evil, that overtake the heart of man are known as lusts of the flesh.
God desires to meet our needs and wants to satisfy our desires with good things. “Who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalm 103:5 (NIV)
Sometimes our desires, though good can consume us. Everything desired in excess becomes sin. God made our bodies to crave for food but that to an excess becomes gluttony. The same way God made our bodies to desire sex and that, too, craved in excess becomes lust. God meets our sexual needs through marriage but equips us with self control while we wait.
Lust as defined by The Baker Illustrated Bible Dictionary is known as indulging in illegitimate sexual fantasizing. God condemns this. Ridding yourself of such lusts or satisfying your urges cannot be done without the help of the Holy Spirit.
A constant debate stands whether masturbation is sin or not. When we have uncontrollable urges and desires we are prone to sin and the act of masturbation is man’s attempt to satisfy such lusts. The fruit of the Holy Spirit in Galatians 5 is self-control and without Him we cannot control our urges.
“I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.” Psalm 119:11 (NIV)
“Above all else, gaurd your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13
For us to carry the purity of heart we need to stay in God by staying in prayer and feeding on His word. We have a responsibility to stay pure in singlehood and trust that at God’s perfect time He will meet our needs. He is faithful.
