Way to the Father
Prayer is one of the essential gifts of salvation. By it we access the presence of God, we are able to give thanks and offer praises to God; we are able to petition and confess our shortcomings to Him.
In the Old Testament no one could access God without the blood of bulls and today no one can access God without the blood of the Lamb – Jesus, because man is full of sin. God is holy and where He dwells is holy; in Him and in His presence is no blemish and man is born in sin.
“Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.” Psalm 24:3-4 (ESV)
Once a year a high priest had to bring an animal sacrifice into the most holy place of the tabernacle of God and offer prayer on behalf of himself and of the people. Today we can come to the Father just as we are because an ultimate sacrifice was made for you and I. Jesus died on the cross and rose again so that we could ascend the hill of the Lord, so that we can access God whenever we need to. He sits at the right hand of God as our High Priest and intercedes (make prayer on behalf of) for us. We now have access to God all day, all year round.
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'” John 14:6 (NIV)
And now we have Jesus – His blood and His name, as a means of reaching God; being forever in His presence and in our place of safety. He hides us within Himself and He dwells within God. He is God and God is He.
“Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not justly own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing His work.” John 14:10 (NIV)
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” Proverbs 18:10 (ESV)
We need to be reminded of the concept that children need boundaries because boundaries make secure children. The name of Jesus is our fortress and our place of safety, the boundary that we need and the presence of God is found in adhering to Him. The name of Jesus is also the key to our answers. We receive favour from God because of this name and our prayers are answered because of Him.
“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” John 14:13-14 (NIV)
We do not have to pray from afar. We do not have to worry about being heard. We do not have to worry about our shame because Jesus tore the veil and now we can come to the Father just as we are by Jesus, The Way.
